We want the best for our homes and family. So, of course, we want the best solar panels for home solar energy production.
There are many solar panel manufacturers out there. You have probably heard of Chinese made panels undercutting the market. While there are some quality Chinese manufacturers, the ones that are coming in at extremely low panel prices are also producing very low-quality panels.
We went with SolarWorld USA panels made in Hillsboro Oregon. The quality is beyond any other panel we have seen. Hail, baseballs, even a truck driving over the panels could not damage these solar panels.
Now let’s talk efficiency. Solar panel efficiency is based on the amount of power a panel can produce. Efficiency is defined by the Watt-Peak (Wp) divided by the size of the panels. The rating is done in lab circumstances, not in real-world situations. SolarWorld designed solar panels for the real world, not for the lab.
Competitors panels may test higher in the lab but what happens when they get dusty? Just like the dust bunnies in your home, the dust tends to get blown off to the sides. Of course, I meant your neighbors home, we know you would never tolerate dust bunnies in your home. The real world has dust, so SolarWorld panels have a dust margin at the edges.
A good solid panel is going to have a raised edge. SolarWorld has reduced its profile as much as possible but you can’t make a durable panel that can take on a hail storm and give it dainty edges. But those edges cast a shadow during early morning and late afternoon hours. For competitors panels that shadow is partially on the silicone. The real world also has heat and lots of it. Testing in a nice air-conditioned lab is very different from the 98 degrees Fahrenheit of Bakersfield or Fresno. Most materials expand a little as they get hot. It is no different for the materials used to make solar panels. The electrons that make up an electric current take up nearly no space at all but they need conductive wiring to ride along to get from the silicon wafers of your panel all the way to your home or the grid. That wiring does take up room and solar world spaces out their silicone wafers so that in the real world situation where heat has expanded the materials the current still has someplace to go.
